Connue comme la "reine des missions", la mission Santa Barbara a été fondée le 4 décembre 1786 par le père Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, quatre ans après la fondation de la forteresse qui fut à l'origine de la ville de Santa Barbara en Californie.
La mission de Santa Barbara est l'une des seules missions de Californie à être encore occupée par des pères franciscains. . En 1786, le père Junipero Serra fondait la "Reine des missions" devenue le plus important couvent franciscain de Californie.
