Quello di Hirsholmene è l’arcipelago più settentrionale della Danimarca, situato a circa 7 Km NE della città di Frederikshavn, nel Kattegat settentrionale. Le isole sono costituite da argilla e sabbia depositatesi durante l’ultima era glaciale su strati rocciosi. Il nome Hirsholmene, o Hælsholmæ, significa “isola con il collo”.L'altitudine massima sul livello del mare è di circa 6 metri. L'arcipelago è composto da otto isole e diversi isolotti, per una superficie totale di circa 47 ettari, e solo la seconda più grande, Hirsholm, è abitata. Sulle due punte settentrionale e meridionale di Hirsholm vi sono due bunker di cemento armato di costruzione tedesca, residui bellici della seconda guerra mondiale. La parte meridionale dell'isola è interamente colonizzata da uccelli marini, e durante il periodo di cova non è accessibile.
