La Plaza Mayor de Madrid è situata al centro della città, a pochi metri dalla piazza della Puerta del Sol e dalla Plaza de la Villa insieme alla calle Mayor.
Le origini della piazza risalgono al XV secolo, quando alla confluenza dei caminos di Toledo e Atocha, ai confini della città medievale, si celebrava in questo luogo, conosciuto come Plaza del Arrabal, il mercato principale della città, in cui vi era una prima zona porticata, per regolare il commercio nella piazza.
