"Sorry, I don’t speak Netherlands.” Het is een antwoord waar zowel Brusselaars als Amsterdammers al lang niet meer van opkijken. Overleeft het Nederlands in onze hoofdsteden? Wat met de vele tientallen andere thuistalen? En welk cement hebben stadsbewoners nog nodig behalve taal? “Als je er een strijd tussen Nederlands en Engels van maakt, wint die laatste.”
De toekomst is meertalig, we horen het verschillende keren in zowel Brussel als Amsterdam. En dat Engels vandaag nog niet meteen Nederlands zal verdringen, merkt taalexpert Marc van Oostendorp aan kleine dingen. “Als je vandaag in het buitenland Engels spreekt met iemand die later ook Nederlandstalig blijkt te zijn, komt nog steeds een soort schaamtegevoel op. Zolang dat zo is, is Nederlands niet in gevaar.”
Hoe gaan de steden om met cruciale uitdagingen rond mobiliteit, wonen, afval, toerisme en taal?
