In 1794 stichtte een groepje Franse monniken van de Cisterciënzerorde de abdij der trappisten van Westmalle. Binnen de muren van de abdij brouwen de monniken hun eigen bier (Westmalle Tripel, Dubbel en Extra), maken ze trappistenkaas en werken ze op de boerderij. Er leven momenteel zo’n 35 monniken, die een teruggetrokken leven leiden van gebed, studie en arbeid. Daarom kun je de abdij en de brouwerij niet bezoeken.

Aan de abdij start de wandeling Trappistenpad (8 km) en de fietslus Trappistenroute (44 km). Tegenover de abdij, in café Trappisten, geniet je na bij een glas trappist van ’t vat en een portie abdijkaas. Ook de heerlijke abdijkaaskroketten zijn niet te missen!
