Het stadhuis van Luik werd gebouwd tussen 1714 en 1729 op het terrein van het oude gotische stadhuis en tegenover het beroemde perron, symbool van de stedelijke vrijheidsdrang.
Dit stadhuis, in de volksmond ook wel 'La Violette' wordt genoemd, is een groot, U-vormig gebouw met twee verdiepingen, uit afwisselend baksteen en kalksteen.
De grote inkomhal is toegankelijk via een imposante trap en werd getooid met acht zuilen, vier pilasters in zwarte steen en een tribune die ondersteund wordt door vier eikenhouten atlanten (1717/1718).
Hierop bevinden zich rijkelijk gedecoreerde kamers en salons, waaronder op de eerste verdieping de gemeenteraadszaal, gelegen aan de voorgevel, die het schouwtoneel vormt van het Luikse politieke leven.
