Newland's Corner is gekoppeld aan het verdwijnen van de beroemde schrijfster Agatha Christie. Eind 1926 vroeg haar man Archie Agatha om een echtscheiding. Hij was verliefd op Nancy Neele. Op 3 december 1926 hadden de Christies ruzie, en Archie verliet hun huis, Styles, in Sunningdale, Berkshire, om het weekend door te brengen met zijn minnares in Godalming, Surrey. Diezelfde avond, om 9.45 uur, verdween Christie uit haar huis en liet ze een brief achter voor haar secretaresse. Ze zei dat ze naar Yorkshire ging. Haar auto, een Morris Cowley, werd later gevonden hier aan Newlands Corner, boven een krijtgroeve, met een verlopen rijbewijs en wat kleding. Ondanks een uitgebreide zoekactie, werd niets van haar gevonden. Dit 10 dagen lang. Op 14 december 1926 werd ze gevonden in het Swan Hydropathic Hotel (nu het Old Swan Hotel) in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Ze was geregistreerd als mevrouw Teresa Neele (de achternaam van de geliefde van haar echtgenoot) uit Kaapstad.
