Het Stymphalos-meer is de kern van de Stymphalos-polje. Een polje is een grote depressie met een vlakke vloer in karstkalksteen. Oppervlakkige afzettingen hebben de neiging zich op te hopen langs de vloer. De afwatering kan plaatsvinden via oppervlaktewaterlopen (als open polje) of via slikken (als gesloten polje) of ponors. De Stymphalos polje bevat het enige permanente meer in de regio. Het Stymphalos-meer wordt afgevoerd door een groot, poortachtig zinkgat. Het water wordt uiteindelijk afgevoerd uit bronnen in de Argolid. Er zijn verschillende pogingen ondernomen om de hoeveelheid moerassig land in de vallei te verminderen; de vroegste bestond uit een kanaal dat was uitgesneden tussen de bron en het zinkgat. Rond 125 na Christus werd deze opstelling verbeterd door de aanleg van een tunnel door de heuvels in het zuiden, waardoor het bronwater in de Scotini polje werd afgevoerd. Tegen de vijfde eeuw was de tunnel geblokkeerd en liep de polje onder water, maar hij werd gerepareerd in 1885 na Christus en is nog steeds in gebruik...
