Vrouwenpolder is located at the northern tip of Walcheren, near the Veerse Gatdam that connects the island with Noord-Beveland. It has a wide North Sea beach, which is relatively quiet in summer. Vrouwenpolder was created relatively late compared to other Walcher villages: the chapel was built in the fourteenth century, in an area that had been reclaimed a century earlier. In 1588 Fort den Haak was built to cover the entrance to the Veerse Gat. In 1809, the English, who in that year tried to invade Napoleon's empire via the Dutch coast, destroyed the fort, of which now no more than an empty plain behind the dunes remains.
