The Omal tumuli are grouped along the Roman road between Bavay and Cologne, four aligned to the north and a fifth to the south.
These earthen funerary mounds, 4 to 5 metres high, were built between the end of the 1st century and the beginning of the 3rd century by members of the rural Gallo-Roman élite.
The three tombs which were found contained the ashes of the deceased and some personal items: the tomb of a man contained a sword with an ivory handle and sheath and various containers while the tomb of a woman contained pearls and plates and dishes of glass and bronze.
Omal gave its name, Omalien, to one of the earliest groups of settled farmers in this region.
