The Castle of Santa Ana is a fortress located in Oliva. It is an Asset of Cultural Interest with ministerial registration R-I-51-0010909 of 24 October 2002. [1]
In 1528 the Cortes of Monzón agreed to build defences to protect the coast against the Barbary pirates who raided the Valencian coast with the support of the disgruntled Moorish inhabitants. It was not until 1575 that Philip II commissioned the viceroy of Valencia, Vespasiano Gonzaga y Colonna, to study the defence of the coast, a study that led to the construction of various fortifications such as the castle of Santa Ana in Oliva. In his study, Gonzaga criticizes the state of the city's defenses, which were sparse, old, and lacking in water supply. [1]
