Il termine Impero tedesco o Impero germanico , chiamato anche Secondo Reich , si riferisce comunemente alla Germania nel periodo che va dal conseguimento di una piena unità nazionale il 18 gennaio 1871 fino all'abdicazione del Kaiser Guglielmo II il 9 novembre 1918, mentre più rara è la forma Reich tedesco.
Il nome ufficiale dello Stato era Deutsches Reich, e tale rimase anche durante il periodo della Repubblica di Weimar e sino alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale, anche se, dopo l'Anschluss dell'Austria nel 1938, la Germania nazista prese, prima informalmente, poi dal 1943 ufficialmente, il nome di Großdeutsches Reich . Tale nuova denominazione fu resa vincolante con un decreto del ministro e capo della cancelleria del Reich, Hans Heinrich Lammers, del 26 giugno 1943, ma non fu mai formalmente adottata a livello di atto costituzionale.»
