Colombia has broadly five areas based on climate and landscape: (1) the Andes in the west where the majority of the population is located (mainly in the metropolises Bogota, Medellin and Cali), (2) the Caribbean Coast (with some major population centers such as Cartagena and Barranquilla), (3) the Pacific coast, (4) the plains of the Orinoco and (5) the jungle of the Amazon (the Orinoco and Amazon). The latter area covers 54% of the area of Colombia, but has only 3% of the population.
