1865 gegründet als privates Technikum kann die heutige Fachhochschule eine Reihe von berühmten Absolventen vorweisen, z.B. die Automobilbauer August Horch & Fritz Opel oder der Erfinder des PAL-Farbfernsehens Walter Bruch. Auf dem Campus befindet sich der Galgenberg, welcher früher als Richtstätte genutzt wurde. Die Besonderheit des Ortes sind Teufelssteine, welches aus dem seltenen Mineral Cordieritgneis bestehen. Dieses Material trifft man sonst nur noch auf Zypern an.
