Die Universität Hamburg ist mit über 40.000 Studierenden die größte Universität in der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg, die größte Forschungs- und Ausbildungseinrichtung in Norddeutschland und eine der zehn größten Hochschulen in Deutschland. Sie ist seit Juli 2019 als Exzellenzuniversität Deutschlands prämiert. Ihren Hauptsitz hat sie seit ihrer Gründung 1919 im Stadtteil Rotherbaum. Die Universität ist in acht Fakultäten gegliedert, die über 170 Studiengänge anbieten.
Die Universität beteiligt sich seit 2012 nicht mehr an Rankings, findet sich aber weiterhin in internationalen Ranglisten wieder. Unter anderem wird sie 2017 im Times Higher Education Ranking und Shanghai-Ranking, dem U.S. News & World Report sowie den CWTS Leiden und CWUR Rankings unter den führenden 200 Universitäten weltweit gelistet, was weniger als 1 % aller Institutionen entspricht.
