Gößnitz [Aussprache: gœsnɪt͡s] ist die bevölkerungsmäßig kleinste und flächenmäßig zweitkleinste Stadt im Landkreis Altenburger Land in Thüringen. Bekannt ist die Landstadt vor allem durch den Eisenbahnknotenpunkt der Bahnverbindung Leipzig–Hof und der Mitte-Deutschland-Verbindung sowie das seit 1993 jährlich stattfindende Gößnitz Open-Air. Die größte Blüte erlebte die Stadt zur Zeit der Industrialisierung, so prägt die repräsentative Malzfabrik Viktor Grimms Nachfolger von 1889 noch heute das Stadtbild.
Gößnitz ist die östlichste Stadt Thüringens und die südlichste des Altenburger Landes. Durch die Stadt fließt das Meerchen, welches im Süden in die Pleiße mündet, der Ort liegt im Übergangsgebiet vom Erzgebirgsvorland zur Leipziger Tieflandsbucht.
