Die Piaristen sind Angehörige der katholischen Männer-Ordensgemeinschaft Ordo Clericorum Regularium Pauperum Matris Dei Scholarum Piarum . Ihr gehören vornehmlich Priester an, die in der Erziehung und im Schuldienst wirken.
Die Piaristen gehen auf eine Gründung des Spaniers, des Hl. José de Calasanz zurück. Im Jahr 1597 errichtete der später heiliggesprochene Calasanz in zum Kloster der Kirche Santa Dorotea gehörenden Räumen im römischen Armenviertel Trastevere die erste kostenfreie Schule für arme Kinder. Am 6. März 1617 wurde durch das Breve Ad ea per quae von Papst Paul V. eine neue Kongregation in der Kirche ins Leben gerufen. Es war die Paulinische Kongregation der Armen der Mutter Gottes von den Frommen Schulen .
