St. Martin's Basilica

Famous is the statue of the Black Madonna of Halle. The statue is 92.5 centimeters high. There is no agreement on the cause of the color. Is it brown (read: black) because heads and hands were once covered with silver that has been oxidized? Is it black due to the action of candle soot and incense? Has it always been black because it belongs in the age-old tradition of black Statues of Mary? Mary is depicted sitting down breastfeeding Jesus. The head and hands of Mary and Jesus are carved in wood. The clothes of both are soaked in linen in plaster, elaborated. Traces of polychromy have been observed: dark brown for the skin areas and blue for the rug. The statue was crowned on 4 October 1874 by order of Pope Pius IX.
