The museum church of St. Peter was built in 1704 to replace the castle chapel on the domain of Count Ernest d'Aspremont-Lynden. Due to disputes between the spiritual and secular authorities, the church was not completed until 1723. After a fire in 1755, it took 20 years before it was rebuilt.
The church remained in use until 1956. Since 1970 it has been a museum church.
The interior is largely from the 18th century. It has several exceptional details such as a land rod, trompe l'oeil effects, a crypt, a stately processional door, a Roman baptismal font and the Holy Well. In addition, the church also has a remarkable roof truss.
On April 5, 2000, the carillon of the museum church of Oud-Rekem was presented and inaugurated. It consists of fifteen bells.
