In the early 17th century, the current “Zoete Waters” or Sweet Waters was a large swamp. Around that time excavation began on dams, forming the water into ponds which allowed for the water levels to be controlled. The inhabitants of Louvain came in the 1900s here to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. When the name Sweet Waters formed is not clear but one of the earliest uses can be found in a book written by Ernest Claes. Ernest knew the area well, because in his book “Leuven, o Schone Dagen” he tells about a visit he rather enjoyed. From 1932 an amusement park was expanded to ,meet the Sweet Waters . An important part of it was a wooden velodrome , where former world champion Poeske Scheerens occasionally came to train.
This location is also excellent place to enjoy a meal or one of the region's sparkling wines at the many taverns and restaurants that border the lakes. Cheers!
