This Anglo-Norman residential area is a large plot of dune which the Belgian government granted on a long term lease or ‘concession’ in 1889 in order for private owners to construct a romantic Belle Époque quarter. German urbanist Joseph Stübben determined the appearance of De Haan. The neighbourhood's listed tram station and the residential area to the north of the track are great examples of Anglo-Norman timber framing that is so typical for Belle Époque architecture on the Belgian coast. A walk through this area is an absolute must and will instantly transport you to the year 1900.
