In the Peel (derived from the Latin palus = swamp) impenetrable loam layers are quite close to the surface, which made it difficult for rainwater to sink. In many places swamps were created and locally raised bogs formed. When it was discovered that dried raised peat could be used as fuel, peat was put on the edge of the marshland for centuries. Around the middle of the 19th century, large-scale excavation began to extract peat.
National Park De Groote Peel is located on the border of North Brabant with Limburg. De Groote Peel is one of the last, largely mined raised peat bogs that have not been cultivated. It is a landscape of alternately inaccessible peat bog, lakes, heathlands, plains and sand ridges. The marshland has been made accessible by the construction of 'bat paths'.
