Cunera Church

The church, with its 82-metre-high tower, is the most iconic building in the city of Rhenen and has great similarities with the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren of Amersfoort and the Dom tower of Utrecht. The construction of the current church was started after the great city fire of 1400. The tower was built between 1492 and 1531. In the middle of the 15th century, Rhenen became a popular place of pilgrimage, with Cunera as the central figure. According to legend, she was rescued from the Huns by King Radboud in the fourth century and taken to his castle in Rhenen. She stood up for the poor people, but the jealous queen strangled her with a cloth. Miracles that occurred around her grave led to the canonization of Cunera by Bishop Willibrord. After the legend was written in the fourteenth century, the pilgrimage to Rhenen started. This provided income, with which the church and the tower could be built.

Inside the church, the beautiful renaissance-style oksaal from around 1550 and the choir stalls from 1570 stand out.
