Look up, above the covered areaway that leads to the basement level. Do you see the tan colored circles below the window?
Those circles are actually physical evidence of The Grove Hotel, operated by Reinette Long Hunt in the 1930s. The tan circles are repairs to beam pockets that supported bathrooms built on the east elevation of the home. Check out the picture above to see what the bathroom addition looked like from the front yard in 1937. The Collins family removed the bathrooms in order to restore the home to its original appearance.
Reinette rented out rooms here to help make ends meet during the Great Depression. She built partitions inside the home for more privacy, and added bathrooms such as the one that used to be here. Room rates started at $1.25 per night.
