La catastrophe d'Aberfan est le glissement d'un pan d'un terril à Aberfan, petit village du sud du pays de Galles, le 21 octobre 1966, provoquant la mort de 144 personnes dont 116 enfants.
À 9 h 15 du matin, par un temps brumeux, le terril no 7 de la mine locale subit un glissement de terrain. Le câble du téléphone de l'équipe située en haut du terril ayant été volé, aucun signal d'alarme ne peut être émis. Sur son passage, le glissement de terrain emporte un premier cottage dont les habitants sont tous tués. Vingt maisons sont détruites ainsi que l'école, la Pantglas Junior School, dont la majorité des élèves, 116 enfants, ainsi que 5 enseignants, sont tués. La catastrophe a duré moins de 5 minutes.
