Het was hier in Schloss Schönbrunn dat Frédéric Staps probeerde Napoleon te vermoorden. Napoleon was hier om een militaire parade te bekijken. Eén van de assistenten van Napoleon, generaal Rapp , werd achterdochtig over de jongeman die de keizer benaderde. Er werd een mes gevonden en Staps gaf toe dat zijn plannen waren om de keizer te doden. Napoleon vroeg of Staps hem zou bedanken als hij gratie kreeg, waarop Staps antwoordde: "Ik zou je niet minder vermoorden." Hij werd geëxecuteerd door het vuurpeloton op 17 oktober 1809. Zijn laatste woorden waren: "Vrijheid voor altijd! Duitsland voor altijd! Dood aan de tiran! '
