De Kapittelbeek ontspringt in het Hallerbos en stroomt in Dworp in de Molenbeek. Het bronwater dat deze bronrivier voedt is zeer kalkrijk als gevolg van een doorsijpeling van het kalkhoudende Brusseliaan zand. Daardoor zet het kalkrijke water op bepaalde plekken een karakteristieke neerslag van calciumcarbonaat af wat we kennen als travertijnvorming. Hier vormt de travertijn maar kleine blokjes steen, maar indien dit grote vormen aannneemt is die travertijn een zeer populaire siersteen die veel gebruikt wordt in bouwconstructies. Het oorlogsmonument op de Dam van Amsterdam en delen van het colosseum in Rome zijn voorbeelden waar travertijn als bouwsteen gebruikt werd.
