Op de 2de zondag van mei neemt elk jaar de Ieperse Kattestoet plaats. Tot in 1817 werden hier levende katten van het belfort naar beneden geworpen. In 1938 werd het kattenwerpen opnieuw geïntroduceerd met pluchen katten.
De oorzaak van deze traditie zou ontstaan zijn in 962 toen Graaf Boudewijn III de opdracht gaf om elk jaar 3 levende katten van de torens van het huis "De Korte Meers" te gooien. Dit zou nodig zijn om het kwaad af te zweren. Dit idee blijkt niet zo uniek te zijn want ook in het Franse Amiens heeft men deze traditie.
