Nelson's Column is opgericht voor de grote held admiraal Horatio Nelson. Hij werd neergeschoten op het achterdek van het schip Victory tijdens de Slag om Trafalgar. Een musketkogel trof Nelson in de linkerschouder en ging door zijn ruggengraat bij de zesde en zevende borstwervel. Nelson riep uit: "Het is ze eindelijk gelukt, ik ben dood."
Sommige bronnen beweren dat zijn lijk in een vat cognac werd geplaatst om het tijdens de lange reis naar huis te bewaren. En dat de bemanning het niet erg vond dat zijn lichaam wegborrelde in de cognac.
