De Universiteit van Sheffield is een onderzoeksuniversiteit in de Britse stad Sheffield in het graafschap South Yorkshire. Ze behoort tot de oorspronkelijke groep van de zogenoemde red brick-universiteiten en is lid van de Russellgroep. Ze stond als 112de gerangschikt in de Global Universities Ranking en werd in 2007 geplaatst bij de top 20 van universiteiten in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Europa volgens The Good University Guide. Verder plaatsten de gezaghebbende Shanghai-ranglijst en de Times Higher Education World University Rankings de universiteit in de top 10 van het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de top 100 van de wereld. De universiteit bracht tot nog toe vijf Nobelprijswinnaars voort. In 2008 oordeelde een onderzoeksevaluatie dat 41 van de 49 ingediende onderzoeken "wereldwijd toonaangevend" of "internationaal uitstekend" waren. Hiermee komt de universiteit van Sheffield bij de top 10 van de Russellgroep te liggen.
