In de 19e eeuw werd de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie aangelegd, een verdedigingsstelsel waarbij grote stukken land onder water konden worden gezet. Fort bij Asperen, gebouwd tussen 1845 en 1847, was onderdeel van deze linie. Het is een zogeheten torenfort met torens van zwaar metselwerk, die een doorsnede van maar liefst 33 meter hebben. Het fort is omgeven door een gracht en is bereikbaar via een houten brug. Op 12 april 1940 werd de waterlinie voor de laatste keer onder water gezet en het Fort bij Asperen in stelling gebracht tegen de vijand.
Het heet nu Kunstfort Asperen en er worden culturele evenementen en exposities georganiseerd.
