Ten zuiden van Hilversum waren vanaf het eind van de 19e eeuw tot in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw tientallen boerderijen in bedrijf. De boeren lieten hun vee grazen op de uitgestrekte weilanden tussen Hilversum en Loosdrecht. Nu is slechts een enkele boerderij nog in functie. Op een deel van deze graslanden kwam in 1936 het woonwagenpark Egelshoek. Een ander groot deel werd het vliegveld.
