Culturele hoofdstad van 2018 en de plaats waar de historische Oldehove en de hedendaagse Achmeatoren markante gebouwen zijn in de skyline van Leeuwarden. Dwalend over de Nieuwestad, het winkelcentrum, door de pittoreske stegen met kleine verrassende winkeltjes en eetgelegenheden, en de Prinsentuin, kom je vele historische gebouwen tegen, zoals De Waag, de Jacobijnekerk en de Blokhuispoort. Ook ligt hier de geschiedenis van beroemde Nederlanders zoals Abe Bonnema en Margaretha Zelle, alias Mata Hari.
Als hoofdstad van de provincie Fryslân is Leeuwarden ook de start en finish van de legendarische Tocht der Tochten, de Friesche Elfsteden, een tocht van meer dan 200 km langs de Friese 11 steden waarin het woord doorzettingsvermogen centraal staat. Dit is vooral ontstaan na de zware tocht van 1963, waarbij de weersomstandigheden de grootste tegenstander van de deelnemers bleek te zijn.
