El riu Vltava és el riu més llarg de la República Txeca. El seu curs transcorre cap al nord des del seu naixement a Šumava passant per Český Krumlov, České Budějovice i Praga, unint-se després amb l'Elba a Mělník. Té una longitud de 430 quilòmetres i rega una àrea d'aproximadament 28.000 quilòmetres quadrats; a la confluència porta més aigua que l'Elba, però s'hi uneix formant un angle recte respecte al seu curs, de manera que sembla que en sigui l'afluent.
