La Universitat de Gießen es troba entre les universitats del món de parla alemanya més antigues. Va ser fundada el 1607 com una universitat luterana a la ciutat de Gießen a Hesse-Darmstadt perquè la universitat propera, la Universitat de Marburg a Marburg, Hesse-Kassel va resultar calvinista.
