Està situat a la costa, entre Montgat i Premià de Mar. Té un relleu molt accidentat, a causa de la proximitat de la Serralada Litoral.
L'actual terme municipal del Masnou va pertànyer antigament a Sant Feliu d'Alella i a Sant Martí de Teià, pobles de l'entorn relativament allunyats del mar per protegir-se dels atacs dels pirates. La seva població vivia de l'agricultura i la pesca, i, a la platja, s'hi van establir les comunitats de pescadors.
