La vila i municipi de Llimiana se situa al sud de la comarca del Pallars Jussà, entre el Montsec de Rúbies, la Conca de Tremp i la serra de Sant Gervàs.
Té un enclavament de 3,52 km², apartat de la resta del terme municipal, els Obacs de Llimiana, situat entre Gavet de la Conca i Isona i Conca Dellà . És un dels pocs termes municipals pallaresos que no han sofert remodelacions als anys 70: ni s'ha agrupat a cap altre municipi, ni se li n'ha agregat cap.
