El cap Matapan és el punt més al sud d'Europa, el central de tres caps del sud del Peloponès, a la Grècia continental. La península també és coneguda com a Matapan. Matapan és probablement una altra forma de Μέτωπον, Métopon, nom alternatiu donat antigament a la punta.
El cap de Matapan es connecta amb el de Taígetos per una badia a la part oriental de la qual hi havia Porto Quaglio, transformat en Kaio, i a l'oest Marinári o Marmári. Quaglio fou el nom donat pels venecians. A la part oriental de la península hi ha dos ports destacats, Vathy i Asómato o Kistérnes, més petit, al sud. La part occidental és rocosa i sense ports.
