El Gran Canal és el principal canal de Venècia. Té una llargada d'uns 3800 metres i una amplada que varia des dels 30 metres als 70, i una profunditat mitjana de 5 metres. Divideix en dues parts la ciutat amb la seua forma de essa invertida, des del seu començament prop del Ponte della Libertà fins al Bacino di San Marco, davant del Palau Ducal.
