Les Portas do Meio són la porta per on s'accedeix al poble.
La nova fortalesa, creada al segle XVIII mitjançant reformes i ampliacions, es va dividir en dues zones, encara avui força diferenciades, connectades per la Porta do Meio.
Al nord s'estén la zona anomenada “ Magistral ” o “ Vila ”, de planta majoritàriament rectangular, que abasta l'antic nucli medieval, on es concentrava la major part de la població i els principals equipaments socials i administratius. Està formada per set baluards i tres revellins.
Al sud es troba la zona de Coroada , una zona més petita, però gairebé sense urbanitzar, formada per tres baluards i dos revellins.
Tot i això, fortalesa en principi inexpugnable construïda al segle XVIII, Valença va ser atacada durant la Guerra del Francès i va caure en mans de les tropes napoleòniques el 1809.
