La font va ser construïda al segle XVI pel mestre picapedrer João Lopes "el vell", el mateix que va realitzar la font de Caminha i probablement també algunes de les fonts similars que podem trobar en ciutats gallegues com Pontevedra.
Es diu que va substituir a una font més antiga en què van treballar els picapedrers Fernão Anes (1512) i João Gonçalves (1523).
Les obres van començar a finals de 1553 i l'obra de la font es va acabar possiblement el 1555. No obstant això , la manca de fons va fer que les obres de canalització de l'aigua es posposessin per a la resta de la dècada de 1550. Durant segles, aquesta va ser font d' abastament d'aigua potable per als habitants de Viana. A l'agost de 1559, a causa de la manca de fons, el municipi va decidir vendre roba (edredons i banderes) pertanyents al municipi per pagar l'obra de la font i altres necessitats.
