L' Estatua de Carvalho Araújo ret homenatge a José Botelho de Carvalho Araújo (1881-1918), oficial naval i heroi nacional.
El monument va ser inaugurat el 14 d'octubre de 1931 , exactament 13 anys després de la seva mort a la Primera Guerra Mundial. L'estàtua de bronze mostra Carvalho Araújo en una posició decidida, simbolitzant la serietat de la seva decisió i el seu coratge.
Carvalho Araújo va néixer a Porto, però va créixer a Vila Real . Va servir com tinent primer en l'Armada Portuguesa i es va fer famós per la seva valenta acció el 14 d'octubre de 1918. Durant una missió prop de les Açores, va escortar al vaixell de passatgers São Miguel amb el dragaminas Augusto de Castilho . Quan un submarí alemany, l'U-139, comandat per von Arnauld de la Perière, va atacar el vaixell de passatgers, Carvalho Araújo va col·locar el seu vaixell entre l'enemic i el vaixell, salvant així la vida de la tripulació. Morir a l'acció , just un mes abans del final de la guerra.
