Gran part de la selva tropical al voltant del Kilimanjaro s'utilitza per al cultiu de cafè, plàtans i altres cultius. Aquestes i altres espècies vegetals introduïdes com el xiprer Cupressus lusitanica desplacen les espècies d'arbres autòctons .
Hi ha molt debat entre els científics sobre la fusió de la capa de gel del Kilimanjaro . El gel encara cobria 12 Km2 l'any 1912 i ara (2005) només en queden 2 Km2 . A aquest ritme, s'espera que el gel desaparegui el 2020 .
Originalment es pensava que es devia al canvi climàtic, estudis més recents han demostrat que l'explicació s'hauria de buscar més aviat en la desforestació regional.
