Byens centrum ligger til venstre for Drau i den yderste vestlige del af Kärnten ved grænsen til Osttirol, cirka 20 km øst for Lienz. I Oberdrauburg drejer vejen mod Gailbergsattel ind i Gailtal. Stedet er et godt udgangspunkt for udflugter til Lienzer Dolomiterne og Kreuzeckgruppen.
