Det er her, at den gamle landsby Ixelles engang lå, en af de 19 bruxellesiske kommuner. Maelbeek, der har sin kilde lidt længere oppe nær Abbey of La Cambre, dannede her naturlige damme, hvor munkene opdrættede fisk. To af disse damme er stadig synlige, mens den tredje er blevet fyldt op og omdannet til at skabe dette torv. Maelbeek er derimod blevet kloakeret. Den smukke bygning af Det Nationale Radiodiffusionsinstitut, som sendte fra 1930 til 1960, er en klassificeret Art déco bygning af arkitekten Diongre, kaldet "Liners".
