Kanalen til Beverlo blev anlagt på rekordtid af 3 år. Udgravningen startede i 1854. Det fungerer som en afgrening fra Kanalen Bocholt-Herentals og blev primært udgravet af militære årsager. Det var en forsyningskanal for garnisonbyen Leopoldsburg. Senere blev det også kommercielt vigtigt for metalindustrien i Lommel.
Kanalen ender blindt i havnekummen i Leopoldsburg og er fri for sluser.
