Kommunen har over 13.000 indbyggere. Kommunen blev dannet den 1. januar 1977 ved sammenlægning af forskellige små kommuner, som nu alle har status som delkommune. Kommunen er opkaldt efter en landsby nær Trembleur. Indtil 2001 var den officielle navn på kommunen Blégny. Af udtale tekniske årsager blev dette ændret til Blegny på denne dato.
