Waals- henviser til det faktum, at det drejer sig om den walonske del af den tidligere belgiske provins Brabant. Denne blev opdelt den 1. januar 1995.
Navnet Brabant er afledt af Braecbant. Dette er en sammensætning af braec, som betyder mos or sumpet land, og bant, der betyder område. Navnet kan derfor forklares som sumpet område.
