Historikeren Sanderus kaldte Ninove en smule spottende "den ældste, den dristigste og den klogeste af byerne". I hans "Flandria Illustrata" fra 1644 lyder det således: "Ninive quattor habet portas. Hae portae, quamvis possint, vix umquam clauduntur: unde vulgari loco Ninove dicitur antiquissima, audaccissima, sapientissima". Den ældste, fordi dens navn kun adskiller sig med én bogstav fra "Ninive", som dengang var hovedstaden i Assyrien fra det gamle testamente. Den dristigste, da den ifølge legenden turde vente fjenden med åbne porte ... Den klogeste, fordi dens foreninger ingen nar havde. Hvis nødvendigt, leverede en naboby nar ...
