Gamle nævnelser af stedet går tilbage til 1170 og 1213 som Calkine. Senere finder man formerne Kalkine, Calckene, Kalkene, Calcken, og fra 1937 til sidst Kalken. Ifølge Maurits Gysseling stammer betegnelsen Kalken fra ordet Kalekinion, som betyder bosættelse i kurven af en flod, eller meander. Denne flod er i dette tilfælde Schelde.
